How to use the dashboard

This guide shows you how to move through the different Youth Employment Dashboard views, apply filters, adjust views, and interact with charts and data tables.

   
 

Step 1: Choose a view

At the top of the dashboard, select whether you want to view:

Please go to the section based on the dashboard you chose.

Section A: How to use the Labour Force Characteristics view

Step 1: Choose a geography

Choose which province you would like to view by going to the right side of the dashboard and selecting the province.

Choosing “Canada” will show combined data from all Canadian provinces only, as territorial data was not available.

Step 2: Select a measurement

Select which measurement you would like to see by going to the right side of the dashboard and selecting one of the following from the Measure Names menu: 

  • Employment rate (%) 
  • Number of labour force participants 
  • Participation rate (%) 
  • Unemployment rate 

Step 3: Select an age range 

Choose which age range or ranges you would like to view by going to the right side of the dashboard and selecting one or multiple of the following from the Age Group menu: 

  • All ages 
  • Youth (15-24 years old) 
  • Prime age (25-54 years old) 
  • Seniors (65+) 

Step 4: Select an educational attainment level or levels

Compare educational attainment levels by going to the right side of the dashboard and under the Educational Attainment menu, selecting or unselecting: 

  • All education levels
  • Primary school
  • Some high school
  • High school graduate
  • Some postsecondary education
  • Postsecondary credentials
  • University degree (bachelor’s degree and above)
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Above a bachelor’s degree

Step 5: Select a gender or genders 

Choose which gender or genders you would like to view by going to the right side of the dashboard and selecting one or all of the following from the Gender menu:

  • Total – Gender
  • Men+
  • Women+

Step 6: Adjust the date range

You can change the time period shown in the chart using the Date range filter on the right side of the dashboard. 

Option 1: Use the text boxes 
  • Click on the first box on the left where the start date is displayed.  
  • Type in the date you would like the data to start in (MM/DD/YYYY) format. 
  • Click on the box on the right where the end date is displayed.  
  • Type in the date you would like the data to end in (MM/DD/YYYY) format. 
  • The chart will automatically update to reflect the selected time period. 
Option 2: Use the slider 
  • Drag the left or right handles to shorten or extend the time range. 
  • Move the slider to focus on a specific period in the chart. 

Step 7: Hover over the chart for more detail

Move your mouse over any point on a line to see more information!

The hover tool will display:

  • Geography
  • Age group
  • Educational attainment
  • Gender
  • Month and year
  • The exact value

Section B: How to use the Vacancies view

Step 1: Choose a geography

Choose which province or territory you would like to view by going to the right side of the dashboard and selecting the province or territory.

Step 2: Choose a category

Choose how you would like to compare the data by going to the right side of the dashboard and selecting one of the following from the Category menu:

  • Education type
  • Experience level

Step 3: Choose a job vacancy characteristic

Select the experience level or education levels you would like to view or compare by going to the right side of the dashboard and choosing one or multiple of the following from the Job Vacancy Characteristics menu:

Education type
  • All levels of education
  • No minimum level of experience required
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Non-university certificate or diploma (combines College, CEGEP, and Trades certifications)
  • College, CEGEP or similar
  • Trades certificate or diploma, or apprenticeship certificate
  • University certificate below a Bachelor’s level
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Graduate degree (above a Bachelor’s degree)
Experience level 
  • Less than 1 year of experience
  • 1-3 years of experience
  • 3-5 years of experience
  • 5-8 years of experience
  • 8 years or more of experience 

Step 4: Select an occupation group

You can use the Occupation Group dropdown menu on the right side of the dashboard to select the characteristics displayed in the chart.

  • Click the dropdown to open the list of available groups. 
  • Check the boxes next to the group you want to display. 
  • Uncheck a box to remove a group from the chart. 
  • Select “Total, all occupations” to display all available occupations.

Step 5: Hover over the chart for more detail

Move your mouse over any point on a line to see more information! 

The hover tool will display: 

  • Geography 
  • Quarter and year 
  • Chosen category (experience or education) 
  • Selected education or experience level 
  • Occupation 
  • The exact number of vacancies 

Section C: How to use the Vacancies and Participation Comparisons view

Step 1: Choose a geography

Choose which province you would like to view by going to the right side of the dashboard and selecting the province.  

Choosing “Canada” will show combined data across all Canadian provinces and territories for Vacancies, while only provincial data is shown for Labour force participants, as territorial data was unavailable.

Step 2: Choose an education level or levels

Compare education levels by going to the right side of the dashboard and under the Education Level menu, selecting or unselecting: 

  • All levels of education 
  • High school education or below 
  • Tertiary education below a bachelor’s degree 
  • Bachelor’s degree 
  • Graduate degree (above a bachelor’s degree) 

Step 3: Adjust the quarter and year

You can change the quarter and year shown in the chart using the Quarter and Year filter on the right side of the dashboard. 

Option 1: Use the calendar selector 
  • Click on the date field to open the calendar. 
  • Select the start or end date you want to display. 
  • The chart will automatically update to reflect the selected time period. 
Option 2: Use the slider 
  • Drag the left or right handles to shorten or extend the time range. 
  • Move the slider to focus on a specific period in the chart. 

Step 4: Hover over the chart for more detail

Move your mouse over any point on a line to see more information! 

The hover tool will display: 

  • Geography 
  • Quarter and year 
  • Educational Attainment 
  • Vacancies or Labour Force Participants 

Section D: How to use the Annual Graduates view

Step 1: Choose a geography

Choose which province you would like to view by going to the right side of the dashboard and selecting the province. Selecting “Canada” will show only combined provincial data, as territorial data was not available.

Step 2: Choose an age group

Choose which age group you would like to view by going to the right side of the dashboard and selecting one of the following from the Age Group menu: 

  • Total, age group 
  • Youth workforce (15-24 years old) 
  • Prime age workforce (25-40 years old) 
  • 40 years and over 
  • Not reported 

Step 3: Choose a gender or genders 

Choose which gender or genders you would like to view by going to the right side of the dashboard and selecting one or all of the following from the Gender menu: 

  • Total – Gender 
  • Man 
  • Woman 
  • Gender unknown 

Step 4: Choose the year you want to view

You can use the Year dropdown menu on the right side of the dashboard to select the year you want to display. 

  • Click the dropdown to open the list of available years. 
  • Select the year you want to view. 
  • The chart will automatically update to display the selected year. 

Step 5: Hover over the chart for more detail

Move your mouse over any point on a line to see more information! 

The hover tool will display: 

  • Geography 
  • Year 
  • Age group 
  • Degree type 
  • Instructional program type 
  • Exact count of graduates by year
